In response to the evolving COVID-19 pandemic, and in alignment with the direction of our CEO, Dr. Kevin Smith, the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre has made the difficult decision to pause some of the elective, non-urgent health care services that we routinely provide for patients with heart and blood vessel diseases. This step is required to ensure that we have the resources necessary to care for our most critically ill patients, with in our program, and across our hospital and Ontario’s health care system.

We appreciate that this pause will be difficult for our patients and their families who will be impacted. Please note that we will be reviewing the list of procedures and operations that we are pausing on a daily basis, and will be working to reduce the impact of this pause on the health of our patients. As always, our first priority is safe, compassionate care for the patients we serve.

Changes to Clinic Appointments

  • For the safety of all of our patients, and our health care teams, we will be reducing the number of outpatient clinic visits.
  • All of our outpatient clinic visits that have already been booked are currently being reviewed by our Staff Physicians and their Medical Administrative Assistants.
  • Any appointments that are not urgent will be rebooked for a later time.
  • Depending on the reason for the appointment, the health care team may arrange a "virtual visit." This might be a phone call, video chat, or Telehealth appointment. This will be decided on a case-by-case basis with the patient.
  • Patients with urgent heart or blood vessel problems can still be seen in clinic. All such patients will be asked a series of questions before their clinic visit, to determine if they have symptoms that patients with COVID-19 can develop. If they do, such patients may be referred to a COVID-19 assessment centre, or be seen in clinic with specific precautions. This will be decided on a case by case basis, in accordance with Ontario guidelines.

Changes to Tests, Procedures and Surgeries

Cardiology tests and procedures that have been paused include:

  • Elective diagnostic coronary angiographies
  • Structural heart disease cases in non-urgent or stable patients
  • Patients who have been assessed as low risk for pacemakers, ICDs and percutaneous valve procedures

All other cardiology procedures will continue as planned until further notice.

Cardiac surgery procedures that have been paused include:

  • Asymptomatic mitral valve repairs
  • Coronary artery bypass grafts for noncritical coronary artery disease
  • Aortic valve replacements for asymptomatic severe aortic stenosis
  • Myectomy (removing excess heart muscle) for stable hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
  • Pericardiectomy procedures
  • Cardiac tumours not causing embolic or obstructive symptoms
  • Thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysm repair for aneurysms just meeting surgical criteria

All other cardiac surgical procedures will continue as planned until further notice.

Heart transplant activities: All heart transplant activities will continue as usual.

Vascular surgery procedures that have been paused include:

  • Bypasses or endoluminal interventions for claudication (pain in the legs with walking)
  • Carotid endarterectomy for asymptomatic carotid stenosis
  • Varicose vein procedures
  • Dialysis access, except for acute thrombosis, sepsis or inability to place a percutaneous dialysis line

All other vascular procedures will continue as planned until further notice.

If you have any questions, please contact your clinic’s Patient Care Coordinator or Surgeon’s Administrative Assistant for information and support.
