The Office of Strategy Management (OSM) is a team dedicated to improving health care planning and processes within the Joint Department of Medical Imaging (JDMI) and across Ontario, on behalf of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Drawing from expertise in lean operations, project management, corporate planning, and data analysis, the OSM is able to deliver strategic change projects including process improvement, strategic planning, operational planning, and more.
The OSM provides valuable planning and project support to the JDMI, playing a pivotal role in coordinating its efficient operations. Recent examples of projects include strengthening clerical processes, particularly within the Central Booking Office, to reduce the time and effort required to book MRI appointments; developing operational plans for Ultrasound; and optimizing the Ultrasound schedule to increase capacity to care for patients without increasing resources.
Two provincial projects executed by the OSM over the past few years include the MRI Process Improvement Program and the Diagnostic Imaging Appropriateness Pilot Project. In the former, members of the team worked with 57 Ontario hospitals to aid in improving MRI processes. The results were shorter wait times, better patient care, and the development of a provincial best practices resource. In the latter of the two projects, members of the team evaluated the impact of evidence-based guidelines to support clinical decision-making on the behaviour of referring physicians.
At its core, the OSM owes its success to its culture of diversity and teamwork. The team is composed of a dynamic group of individuals with clinical, engineering, project management, business and health management backgrounds.
