About Clinical Nutrition

Clinical Nutrition, Apple pictureClinical Nutrition contributes to the overall health and quality of life of our patients. Optimal medical nutrition therapy can reduce complications, hospital stays and mortality. Appropriate nutrition therapy can also decrease the impact of many medical conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and hypertension.

Clinical Nutrition currently has 54 Registered Dietitians (RDs) and 6 Clinical Diet Technicians who are essential to the 4 UHN sites. RDs provide high quality and evidence-based practice within a multidisciplinary framework. Clinical Diet Technicians work under the supervision of RDs, assisting in the provision of optimal patient care to patients.

Many clinical nutrition staff are involved in research to improve the nutrition education and diet therapies they deliver. RDs also contribute to promoting the mission and vision of UHN through participation in both departmental and hospital-wide committees.

RDs at UHN are registered with the College of Dietitians of Ontario, the provincial regulatory body. The practice of dietetics and nutrition at UHN adheres to the standards of care and conduct, as mandated by this organization. Registered Dietitians at UHN also hold membership with Dietitians of Canada, our national organization.
