Education

Foot problems affect over half the population. Prevention, assessment, and treatment require expertise and practical skills. Podiatrists/chiropodists undergo extensive training to meet these requirements. Many have taken 7 or 8 years of post-secondary training before beginning practice.

A Bachelors Degree, plus a 3-4 year Chiropody / Podiatry Program is generally undertaken in North America. Presently, The Michener Institute of Education at UHN, has the only Canadian Chiropody Program, and there are 9 accredited American podiatric medical schools. They are the only regulated foot professionals educated exclusively in the assessment and treatment of foot disorders.

Chiropody at The Michener Institute of Education at UHN

The Michener Institute offers a full-time, three-year Graduate Advanced Diploma of Health Sciences in Chiropody. It is the only English-speaking Chiropody program in Canada, and has a working Chiropody Clinic on campus for students to treat patients under the supervision of licensed Chiropodists and Michener faculty. Many graduates find rewarding work in public community health centres, hospitals or even open their own private practices. They also work with many different healthcare professionals such as nurses, dermatologists, vascular surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, physiotherapists and physicians.
