What We Do

The amount of time between detecting a breast abnormality and making a diagnosis varies greatly from centre to centre. Some patients wait weeks or even months before they find out if they have cancer or not. This waiting time is stressful for patients and their families and friends.

The Gattuso Rapid Diagnostic Centre (GRDC) helps people quickly find out if they have breast cancer. Most breast changes are not breast cancer. Getting a diagnosis quickly means that many people will spend less time worrying. For those who find out they have cancer, it means getting treatment sooner.

How to Get Referred

You need a referral from your doctor or nurse practitioner to become a patient in the Gattuso Rapid Diagnostic Clinic (GRDC).

When making a referral, your referring clinician will include:
  • A letter of referral
  • All breast imaging study reports from the last 5 years
    • Note: Patients will need to submit their external breast imaging studies from the last 5 years, if applicable. Patients should contact the facility where they completed their imaging to request digital access to their images via Pocket Health or other image-sharing portals. If no digital access is available then patients will need to arrange to submit their images on a CD. Patients can call the Gattuso Rapid Diagnostic Centre for further instructions on how and when to submit their external breast imaging.
How Long Does a Referral Take?

Our administrative staff will contact either your office or the patient directly, with the appointment date and time. All referrals are triaged and breast imaging studies are submitted for consultation with our breast radiology team, within 24 hours of receipt of images. The consultation process typically takes 24-48 hours and then the appointment is made for the patient to be assessed in the GRDC. If the referral is incomplete, this will delay the patient's visit. If your patient does not meet the GRDC eligibility criteria, your office will be notified.

Referral Information for Physicians

For complete referral instructions, read the guide for referring physicians.

Note: Your patient is required to obtain all of their prior breast imaging studies for the last 5 years, accompanied by the reports. This may require information from several different institutions, depending on where the imaging has been done.

We will accept digital access to images via Pocket Health or other imaging sharing portal. Digital access to images can be faxed to 416 946 2370 or shared via e-mail to Jyxzl.Sabariza@uhn.ca. If no digital access is available then patients will need to arrange to submit their breast imaging on a CD.

Referral Information for Patients

For patients: In most cases, we will have access to your imaging online using Pocket Health or other imaging sharing portals. However, if digital access is not available, patients will need to deliver images on CD.

Images on CD must be hand delivered or couriered to the address below:

Attn: Gattuso Rapid Diagnostic Centre (GRDC)
Main Floor, Information Desk
Princess Margaret Cancer Centre
610 University Avenue
Toronto, Ontario M5G 2M9

To hand deliver the images:

There is a staff member at the Main Floor Information Desk at the Princess Margaret Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:00 pm to receive CDs from patients.
