Psychologists and other psychology staff are involved in clinical service, research and training across multiple programs and clinics within UHN. Our clinical services include assessment and diagnosis, treatment and therapy and prevention with regard to physical, intellectual, emotional, social and interpersonal health.
Our staff includes psychologists, psychological associates, psychometrists, behaviour therapists and rehabilitation therapists. Our psychologist group includes clinical psychologists, neuropsychologists, health psychologists and rehabilitation psychologists. Psychology staff work as members of inter-disciplinary teams within the hospital and the community to advocate for the needs of our patients.
Our psychologists are health care professionals registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario and have training at the doctoral level. They serve in diverse roles, such as assisting with medical treatment planning; testing learning abilities; helping patients learn tools to overcome debilitating challenges with mood, anxiety, stress, pain and trauma; helping patients and families with rehabilitation; assessing cognition after acquired brain injury or in preparation for or following epilepsy surgery; and helping families learn how to support their loved ones. Many UHN psychologists also conduct research in their respective areas and are actively involved in student training.
Our psychological associates are trained in the assessment, treatment and prevention of behavioural and mental conditions. They are members of the College of Psychologists of Ontario, hold a Master's degree in psychology and have had at least four years of experience working in the scope of practice of psychology.
Our psychometrists administer and score psychological and neuropsychological tests under the supervision of a licensed psychologist or neuropsychologist and are involved in research, group therapy and patient education. Their certification is obtained through the Ontario Association of Consultants, Counsellors, Psychometrists and Psychotherapists, but this is not mandatory.
Behaviour therapists work with patients and family members to modify problematic behaviour (i.e., that may put themselves/others at risk, interfere with rehabilitation/recovery or impact quality of life). This is done using Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) to encourage informal positive interactions, naturally occurring consequences and an environment that reinforces appropriate behaviour. Behaviour therapists work under the supervision of a licensed psychologist. Teaching of new coping or self-regulation strategies is often achieved using Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) strategies for behaviours that are driven by anxiety, depression and anger.
Our rehabilitation therapists work in the brain injury, stroke and musculoskeletal patient programs and in the Complex Injury Outpatient Rehab program at Toronto Rehab. They receive referrals from various professions, such as occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech language pathology, psychology and then deal with patients on a one-to-one basis or in group settings.
Communication regarding patient progress occurs in weekly rounds and/or directly with the referring therapist.
