Festive pop‑ups, photo stations and a sea of blue sweatshirts branded with the slogan "Second to None" filled UHN sites last month as staff gathered to celebrate a major milestone.
Toronto General Hospital was ranked No. 2 on Newsweek's 2026 World's Best Hospitals list — the hospital's highest placement to date. The ranking also recognizes Toronto General as the top universally accessible hospital in the world and the only Canadian institution to appear in the international Top 10.
Across UHN, teams came together to mark the occasion by snapping photos, sharing treats and reflecting on the accomplishment together. The UHN Foundation provided commemorative gear, while staff from various departments connected over the organization's collective success.
President and CEO Dr. Kevin Smith spoke at the celebrations, highlighting UHN's longstanding excellence in patient care, research and education — areas the organization continues to lead internationally.
He emphasized that the global ranking is a direct result of the expertise, compassion and commitment demonstrated daily by staff in every role and discipline, underscoring TeamUHN's ongoing mission to deliver world‑class care.
UHN marks International Women's Day with event focusing on advancing women's leadership
Staff and speakers from across UHN gathered March 5 for an event marking International Women's Day that featured a keynote presentation and panel discussion focused on career growth and professional development.
UHN Women — a committee dedicated to championing women throughout the organization — collaborated to design a program that brought together meaningful dialogue and expert advice.
The event's keynote was presented by Catherine Wang, Associate Deputy Minister of Clinical Care and Delivery at the Ontario Ministry of Health. She reflected on her career progression in health care, crediting much of her success to the connections and opportunities she made in her previous role as a vice-president at UHN.
The audience also heard from a panel of women in diverse roles from across the organization. Their stories offered an inside look at the various experiences and career pathways shaping UHN's mission.
As part of UHN's broader commitment to equity and community support, the celebration included a menstrual product drive in partnership with the YWCA and UHN's Social Medicine Program.
Attendees described the event as a powerful opportunity to bring the network together, and reinforced UHN's commitment to building environments where women feel supported, represented and empowered to succeed.
UHN shines a spotlight on teaching excellence for Teaching and Learning Week
UHN marked Teaching and Learning Week from February 23 to 27 with a series of in-person and virtual activities that highlighted the critical role educators play across the organization every day.
Developed by a cross‑organizational committee of clinicians, educators and education leaders, the program was designed to strengthen teaching skills, highlight available supports, and spotlight the diverse activities that shape training and care delivery throughout the network.
In addition, a dedicated subgroup created a practical leader toolkit to help managers recognize and celebrate educators and learners year-round. Another working group hosted a knowledge‑exchange event to increase visibility of teaching and learning resources available across UHN.
Teaching and Learning Week reflects UHN's continued commitment to building a culture where teaching is recognized, supported and embedded in every role. The event stands as a testament to the collective creativity and collaboration that fuel educational excellence across the organization.
