Antimicrobial stewardship refers to a programmatic, coordinated set of interventions aimed at promoting, tracking, and reporting the appropriate use of antimicrobials to mitigate the rise of antimicrobial resistance.
At UHN, the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP) is comprised of an inter-professional team committed to improving patient safety. We work with clinicians and program leaders to optimize antimicrobial prescribing practices and to support attaining the best possible clinical outcomes for patients. The ASP does this through audit-feedback, knowledge translation, education and tracking and reporting of antimicrobial use to stakeholders and clinicians. As a program that focuses on system-level interventions across all sites at UHN, we collaborate widely with prescribers, nursing, pharmacy, microbiology, digital, clinical leaders, as well as patient quality and safety to achieve our aims.
