Both FM-PRO's Planning & Integration and Redevelopment teams are working together to build a new Stem Cell Transplant Facility at Princess Margaret (PM) Cancer Centre, which will dramatically improve patient outcomes.

The new facility will provide Allo Stem Cell Transplant, which replaces cells damaged by cancer treatment, and Chimeric Antigen Receptor T Cell (CAR-T) Therapy, which programs a patient's immune system to attack cancer cells.

In order to build this new, state-of-the-art space, the Planning Team first met with clinicians from PM to understand their needs and conduct space assessments. From those consultations they identified the need for multiple expansions, including:

  • A new 14-bed inpatient unit for the Stem Cell Transplant Program
  • Purpose built for immunocompromised patients
  • Upgraded ventilation systems
  • Family lounges, so family can be involved in care
  • New malignant hematology day unit that will increase patient capacity and extend outpatient services
  • Expanded malignant hematology clinics purpose built for both virtual and in person cancer care

The teams also co-designed the new space with Patient Partners (current and former UHN patients and caregivers), which lead to:

  • The incorporation of new furniture and equipment
  • Large windows in patient rooms to provide natural light
  • Private washrooms with showers and shelving
  • A patient/family lounge
  • A walking path for patients for better recovery
  • Pantries with kitchenettes

This project is supported and funded by Ontario's Ministry of Health.
