About Difficult Conversations in Cancer
Difficult Conversations in Cancer is a two-part course designed to provide you with skills to support patients and families through difficult conversations with a focus on building therapeutic relationships. The course is currently run virtually.
Program Objectives
The main objective of this course is to support Health Care Providers (HCPs) in their communication-related skills in order to build therapeutic relationships with patients and their families.
Advanced communication between patients and providers can improve:
- Patient self-efficacy, empowerment and partnership with HCPs
- Patient self-management and health outcomes
- Provider well-being and resilience
Program Details
This is a two-part course where you will first complete theoretical learning online, and then participate in a virtual interactive session and practice opportunity with standardized patient actors.
Part 1: Online Learning
The online part of the course is split into four units. You can complete one unit each week leading up to the practice opportunity or complete the units at your own pace.
The units include:
- Unit A: Health Literacy and Communications Strategies
- Unit B: The Art and Science of Plain Language
- Unit C: Teams and Wellness
- Unit D: The Power of Inclusive Language
Part 2: Virtual Live Simulations
In Part 2 of the course, you will participate in virtual live simulations with standardized patient actors. In these virtual simulations, you will receive feedback and debriefing from peers and trained facilitators.
