The award is given annually to a clinical or basic researcher whose body of work has advanced understanding of the pathophysiology, etiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, or treatment of lupus. It was established in 2005 to honour Dr. Hess for her outstanding contributions to lupus research over the course of her long career.
“Dr. Gladman is an internationally renowned lupus research expert – we are thrilled to recognize her outstanding contributions to lupus research,” said Sandra C. Raymond, President and CEO of the Lupus Foundation of America. “This year’s award is particularly poignant as Dr. Hess passed away last year. We applaud Dr. Gladman and the work that she is doing to create a life free of lupus and we celebrate her achievements through this award.”
Dr. Gladman has undertaken numerous studies of lupus including genetic analyses and morbidity, and the developed an index for clinical trials that is used around the world. Dr. Gladman has over 620 peer-reviewed publications and over 900 published abstracts.
“Dr. Gladman is driven by her desire to improve the lives of lupus patients and is dedicated to educating future leaders in the field,” said Dr. Nizar Mahomed, Director of the Arthritis Program. “I speak for our entire Program in congratulating her.”
