ORTHOBIOLOGICS


The Schroeder Arthritis Institute has the great pleasure of announcing a new gift commitment of $6M from the Schroeder Foundation. This gift will enable the development and implementation of orthobiologics and cell therapies on a major scale. With this gift, the Schroeder Arthritis Institute has the opportunity to deliver a comprehensive, consolidated and coordinated pathway for developing, testing and implementing orthobiologics and cell therapies as a standard of care. The Schroeder Arthritis Institute will be the go-to center for established clinical protocols and patient outcomes to create a library of trusted data and published research.

Dr. Sowmya Viswanathan, Dr. Christian Veillette and Dr. Christopher Kim will move forward with the creation of this platform with an orthobiologics registry, research cohort study and a key clinical trial that will enable delivery of these advanced therapeutic products, benchmarking, and quality improvement. Congratulations to Dr. Veillette, Dr. Viswanathan, Dr. Kim and Anette Larsson, Senior Campaign Director for the Campaign to Cure Arthritis, for securing this philanthropic support.

NEW APPOINTMENTS AND PROMOTIONS


Associate Professor

Dr. Christian Veillette, Division Head of Orthopedics and Clinician Investigator as well as an Affiliate Scientist at Techna, has been promoted to Associate Professor at the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto.

 
 

 

Consultant and Co-Editor

Dr. Herbert Von Schroeder, Schroeder Arthritis Institute Hand Surgeon and Clinician Investigator at the Krembil Research Institute, has been appointed as a Consultant for the Workplace Safety and Insurance Tribunal for a three-year term. He has been appointed as a Consultant at Mt. Sinai Hospital's Dovigi Clinic. Dr. Von Schroeder is also a co-editor on a recent book titled "Biomimetics and Bionic Applications", Springer 2021.

 

Development Officer, Campaign to Cure Arthritis and Clinician Partner Program

Bob Hall is joining the Campaign to Cure Arthritis as a Development Officer. He will manage relationships with leadership level donors and focus on the identification of new prospective donors for the Schroeder Arthritis Institute pipeline. In his role, he will also work on increasing clinician engagement in the Campaign to Cure Arthritis and Clinician Partner Program.

 
 

 

Development Associate, Campaign to Cure Arthritis

April Kwak is joining the Campaign to Cure Arthritis as a Development Associate. April has extensive experience in roles requiring strong customer service, organizational skills and administrative support. She is joining the Foundation team with a strong background in the non-for-profit sector.

 

Scientific Counselor for the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases

Dr. Robert Inman, Co-Director of the Schroeder Arthritis Institute and Senior Scientist at the Krembil Research Institute, has been appointed to the Board of Scientific Counselors (BSC) for the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS).

 
 

AWARDS, GRANTS AND RECOGNITIONS

 

Collaborative Pilot Grant Competition 2021

The Schroeder Arthritis Institute is pleased to announce the winners of the inaugural Collaborative Pilot Grant Competition.

Dr. Vinod Chandran and Dr. Sowmya Viswanathan secured funding for their project "Functional Characterization of the Innate Immune Cell Interactions in Osteoarthritis and Psoriatic Arthritis".


Dr. Joan Wither and Dr. Igor Jurisica secured funding for their project "An unbiased approach to identification of T cell functional differences between flaring and quiescent lupus patients.

 

SPARCC Pilot Project Program competition 2021

The annual SPARCC Pilot Project Program competition has recently concluded with a total of 8 meritorious project proposals received in the area of Spondyloarthritis (SpA) research. Two out of three high ranking proposals were from the Schroeder Arthritis Institute.

Dr. Robert Inman, Dr. Igor Jurisica, Dr. Mohit Kapoor and Dr. Fataneh Tavasolian secured funding for their project titled "Epigenetic Modulation of Plasticity and Stability of T Cell Signatures in Ankylosing Spondylitis".


Dr. Akihiro Nakamura and Dr. Nigil Haroon secured funding for their project titled "Pre-Clinical Testing for therapeutic Potentials of in vivo Grade miR-148a-3p and miR-152-3p Mimics in Spondyloarthritis".

 

University of Toronto - Immunology Grant Support

Dr. Robert Inman, Dr. Nigil Haroon and Dr. Vinod Chandran have secured funding from the University of Toronto - Immunology Department for their multicenter project titled "Speck COVID-19 Immunomodulator Vaccine Study".

 

  

Exceptional Practitioner Achievement Award

Leslie Soever, Physiotherapist Practitioner at the Schroeder Arthritis Institute, Division of Orthopaedics Surgery, was awarded the Exceptional Practitioner Achievement Award from the Department of Physiotherapy at the University of Toronto.

 

UHN/SHS Department of Medicine Citizenship Awards

Dr. Arthur Bookman in the Division of Rheumatology at the Schroeder Arthritis Institute, was selected as a winner for the UHN/SHS Department of Medicine Citizenship Awards for supporting educational activities in the Division of Rheumatology.

  
 

  

Arthritis Society Strategic Operating Grant and Lupus Canada Catalyst Grant

Dr. Zahi Touma, a Scientist at the Schroeder Arthritis Institute and the Krembil Research Institute and a Rheumatologist at the Toronto Western Hospital, has received the 2020 Arthritis Society Strategic Operating Grant (SOG) for his project titled "Modeling cognitive impairment in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus: Clinical phenotyping, predictive trajectory, and associated risk factors".

Dr. Touma was also awarded the Lupus Canada Catalyst Grant, for his project titled "A pilot study examining the relationship between cognitive dysfunction and cognitive fatigue in SLE using structural and functional MRIs of the brain and focusing on the underlying mechanisms".

 

New Frontiers in Research Fund

Dr. Heather Baltzer, Director of the Hand Program at the Schroeder Arthritis Institute and clinician investigator at Krembil Research Institute, was awarded the New Frontiers in Research Fund - Exploration grant for her project titled "Development of a smart thumb prosthetic: sensate capacity with low-cost design".

  
 

  

National Psoriasis Foundation Psoriatic Arthritis Grant and COVID-19 Immunity Task Force

Dr. Vinod Chandran, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto and Scientist the Schroeder Arthritis Institute and Krembil Research Institute, was awarded renewal of the National Psoriasis Foundation Psoriatic Arthritis Diagnostic Test Grant, for his project "Multi-omic diagnostic test for psoriatic arthritis in psoriasis patients".

Dr. Chandran also secured funding through the COVID-19 Immunity Task Force for his multi-centre project titled "Safety immUnogenicity of Covid-19 vaCcines in systEmic immunE mediated inflammatory Diseases (SUCCEED)".

Graduate Student, Clinical Fellowship and Research Fellowship Award Competition 2021

The Schroeder Arthritis Institute is pleased to announce the winners of the inaugural Graduate Student, Clinical Fellowship and Research Fellowship Award Competition.

Dr. Nupur Purohit, postdoctoral/clinical fellow supervised by Dr. Heather Baltzer and Dr. Igor Jurisica secured funding for her project titled "Identifying the molecular biomarkers and therapeutic targets of trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis severity".

 

  

Dr. Fatemeh Alavi, postdoctoral/clinical fellow supervised by Dr. Angela Cheung and Dr. Raja Rampersaud, secured funding for her project titled "Spine surgery poor outcome reduction using preoperative measure".

 

  

Atoosa Ziyaeyan, MSc candidate supervised by Dr. Sowmya Viswanathan and Dr. Vinod Chandran secured funding for her project titled "Developing and characterizing an osteochondral model for psoriatic arthritis".

 

Trainee Awards

  

Krembil Research Day 2021

Brian Wu, a PhD candidate under the supervision of Dr. Mohit Kapoor at the Schroeder Arthritis Institute, won 1st prize in the Oral Presentation Graduate Student Category at Krembil Research Day 2021.

  

Lupus Foundation of America Gary S. Gilkeson Career Development Award

Dr. Carolina Munoz Grajales was awarded the Lupus Foundation of America Gary S. Gilkeson Career Development Award for a two-year fellowship to work under the supervision of Dr. Zahi Touma for her project titled “Elucidating the risk factors and trajectories for cognitive impairment in SLE".

  

Lupus Foundation of America Gina M. Finzi Memorial Student Summer Fellowship

Farnoosh Naderinabi, a Medical Student at Western University, was awarded the Lupus Foundation of America Gina M. Finzi Memorial Student Summer Fellowship to work under the supervision of Dr. Murray Urowitz on a project titled "Interferon Alfa as a biomarker to predict lupus nephritis response to treatment".

  

Canadian Rheumatology Association Research Studentship

Connor Maddock, a Medical Student at the University of Dublin, was awarded the Canadian Rheumatology Association Research Studentship to work under the supervision of Dr. Zahi Touma on a project titled "Factors associated with employment and disability in patients with SLE: A nested case-control study".

  

Lupus Foundation of America Gina M. Finzi Memorial Student Summer Fellowship

Seerat Chawla, a BSc Student at the University of California, Los Angeles, was awarded the Lupus Foundation of America Gina M. Finzi Memorial Student Summer Fellowship to work under the supervision of Dr. Zahi Touma on a project titled "Trajectories of depressive symptoms in systemic lupus erythematosus over time".

  

Canada Graduate Scholarship

John Koussiouris, a MSc candidate at the University of Toronto, was awarded the Canada Graduate Scholarship working under the supervision of Dr. Vinod Chandran.

  

National Psoriasis Foundation of America Summer Studentship Award

Sarah Geahchan, a BSc Student at the University of Toronto, was awarded the National Psoriasis Foundation of America Summer Studentship award to work under the supervision of Dr. Dafna Gladman on a project titled "Notch homolog 2 N-terminal-like (NOTCH2NL) is a possible biomarker of psoriatic arthritis susceptibility in patients with psoriasis".

  

Canadian Rheumatology Association Summer Studentship

Anika Spasov, a Medical Student at the University of Ottawa, was awarded the Canadian Rheumatology Association Summer Studentship to work under the supervision of Dr. Zahi Touma on a project titled "Sensitivity to Change Over Time of the Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information Systems (PROMIS) Computerized Adaptive Test (CAT) in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)".

  

Canadian Association of Psoriasis Patients (CAPP) Studentship Award

Dhruv Sharma, a BSc Student at McMaster University, was awarded the Canadian Association of Psoriasis Patients (CAPP) studentship award to work under the supervision of Dr. Vinod Chandran on a project titled "Prognosis and Biomarker Studies in Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis: Identification of fatty acid metabolites in serum of psoriatic arthritis patients using SPME-MS".

 

New Facility at the Schroeder Arthritis Institute

 

Facility Informatics Core

The Schroeder Arthritis Institute is pleased to launch the Informatics Core Facility. This facility brings cost-effective integrative computational biology solutions to the Schroeder Arthritis Institute. Its aim is to foster collaboration and to help advance the research of Institute Investigators working across spectrum of arthritis conditions. This facility is being directed by Dr. Igor Jurisica.
