In this edition, we are highlighting two exceptional individuals who have made an outstanding impact towards the growth and success of the Schroeder Arthritis Institute.

Daniel Antflek

Daniel Antflek

Daniel "Danny" Antflek is the Clinical Research Coordinator within the Hand Program at the Schroeder Arthritis Institute. He has been with the Institute for 12 years. He initially started working in the spring of 2011 within the Division of Orthopedics at the Institute alongside Dr. Rajiv Gandhi. At the time, Daniel was working with Dr. Gandhi on some of his studies for osteoarthritis and assisting with the biobank in terms of helping recruit patients and facilitating the collection process. After six years, Daniel transitioned to his current position within the Hand Program at the Institute, working alongside Dr. Heather Baltzer. Daniel was at the forefront of helping start up the research arm of the Hand Program and playing a key role in establishing the biobank and data repository for thumb osteoarthritis patients. Over the years, he continues to expand the biobank and enable further osteoarthritis research, but his work has expanded to other areas of research and QI projects studying hand trauma, digital amputation, prosthetics and facial palsy.

What motivates Daniel is having the opportunity to work in an environment that has a positive research impact and contributes to meaningful change that can enhance patient care. He is grateful to be part of a team that truly makes a difference in the world. He sees great value and is very passionate in having the chance to discuss the research with patients, providing insight to the meaningful impact of their contributions to the research program. When asked what his Mantra of Success is, Daniel said "Make it a priority not only to listen, but to listen well." He emphasized the importance of detail and focusing closely on what others are saying. Whether they are work colleagues, patients, friends or family, making an effort to really understand their unique point of view will help you get a better sense of the situation and will help you make better decisions. Daniel likes to describe himself as a patient and understanding person, and tries to approach everything with reason and pragmatism. These personality trails help him immensely in his day-to-day work as well as in his personal life. He considers himself to be straightforward and open minded in everything he does, and believes this helps with getting things done in an effective manner.

Daniel's family motivates him every day. He and his partner have two young boys who keep things lively and make sure they don't get too much rest. "Spending time with my children and seeing how they engage with the world, and living vicariously through their experiences, has given me a fresh perspective on life." A fun fact about Daniel is that he met his "wonderful, intelligent, thoughtful, brilliant and incredibly stunning partner", Amanda, while working at the Institute. She continues to work at the University Health Network to this day, and occasionally helps him with his writing. Daniel likes to keep active through activities like cycling, running, and is an avid ultimate frisbee player. When work and personal life allow, he likes to sneak in a good book or geek out with a new video game.

He expressed that he is very grateful to work with and to learn from all of his colleagues over the years. Daniel is looking forward to what the future has to offer and is excited to continue working with the Institute. "There is only getting bigger and better at the Schroeder Arthritis Institute."

On behalf of the Schroeder Arthritis Institute, we are grateful for Daniel's exceptional contributions to the growth and success of the Institute.

Lisa Giraldi

Lisa Giraldi

Lisa Giraldi is the Clinical Manager of the Outpatient Services at the Schroeder Arthritis Institute. She initially started working at the University Health Network in 1996 in various roles. In December 2020, she transitioned to Inpatient Manager on 9A and then transitioned to her current role in January 2022. Lisa's portfolio is very broad and she oversees the operational needs for the Fracture Clinic, the Rheumatology Clinic, the Hand Clinic, the Osteoporosis Clinic, as well as the Low Back Rapid Access Clinic at the Institute. As a Clinical Manager, she manages day to day operations within the clinics, ensuring they are well resourced and continually looks for areas to improve different processes, ensuring that they are providing efficiency for the staff which transfers to better patient experiences. Lisa and her team are always working together to find the best ways of doing things and the most efficient ways to provide care in a timely manner that will benefit the patients the most.

Lisa's biggest motivation is motivating others. She expressed that her leadership style is grounded in respect for people and in being her authentic self. Seeing her team succeed, sharing her knowledge with them as well as learning new things from them is a way to help both her and her team grow. "I am someone who has a set of pom poms ready to go and wants to celebrate the small things and keep things positive and light." Lisa tries her best to always bring joy into her work in healthcare and realizes that there are so many ways to bring in that light.

When asked what her Mantra of Success is, Lisa said "You can't control what happens to you sometimes, but you can control how you react and your outlook on life." Change is the only constant in life and learning how to embrace change is a great way to have a positive perspective in any given situation. Noticing the lessons you can learn and the benefit of a situation can help you navigate anything that comes your way. This helps motivate you, see every situation as an opportunity to grow and to also learn something new. Lisa is a positive person and tries to spread this light in her workplace. She considers herself to be quirky and calm. Having a leader who can laugh when appropriate and be serious when needed is essential. She recognizes the importance of being positive in times change especially whether it's in her work environment or personal life.

Lisa has two children and three cats. She's currently pursuing a Master's of Health Studies degree, and a fun fact is that her son is simultaneously studying for his Master's of History degree. She says they're having a friendly competition over who will finish first. "It has been a mother-son bonding experience, but over textbooks and literature reviews instead of movie nights and popcorn."

Lisa expressed that she continues to be amazed by how vast the Institute is in terms of research, patient care and the impact it has on the world. "It's wonderful being part of a diverse program that is doing so many wonderful things to help patients and the public."

On behalf of the Schroeder Arthritis Institute, we are grateful for Lisa's outstanding contributions to the growth and success of the Institute.

METABOLOMICS FACILITY

Metabolomics Facility

The Schroeder Arthritis Institute launched its Metabolomics Facility last year and it is available to all investigators to conduct metabolomics analysis.

Interest in the study of the metabolome has grown exponentially over the last decade due to its close association with patient phenotype. This close association stems from the fact that the metabolome represents the interaction of the genome with the environment. Metabolomics therefore presents an alternative as well as collaborative avenue for determining disease pathophysiology. The study of the metabolome can also provide a template for developing more personalized interventions or drug-based therapies. You can now explore metabolomics at the Schroeder Arthritis Institute Metabolomics Facility!

The Institute's Metabolomics Facility boasts premier techniques and technologies like the Thermo Scientific Vanquish Flex coupled to the Q-Exactive PlusTM. This liquid chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry is recognized as one of the best and most reliable analytical platforms in the field of the metabolomics analysis. This equipment features high throughput automation, and superb accuracy and precision. The facility uses modern methods to provide services including but not limited to targeted metabolomics (via Biocrates and Metabolomix kits), untargeted metabolomics, clean sample preparation, high throughput sample preparation and sample processing capabilities, and method development. Currently, the facility can perform metabolomics analysis on various biological fluids such as plasma, serum, urine, synovial fluid and more. We will be developing methods for the analysis of semi-solids and tissues soon.

The Schroeder Arthritis Institute Metabolomics Facility is directed by Dr. Vinod Chandran and Dr. Mohit Kapoor. For more information on the general workflow and relative costs, visit our website.
