Our UHN programs and services are among the most advanced in the world. We have grouped our physicians, staff, services and resources into 10 medical programs to meet the needs of our patients and help us make the most of our resources.
University Health Network is a health care and medical research organization in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The scope of research and complexity of cases at UHN has made us a national and international source for discovery, education and patient care.
Our 10 medical programs are spread across eight hospital sites – Princess Margaret, Toronto General, Toronto Rehab’s five sites, Toronto Western – as well as our education programs through the Michener Institute of Education at UHN. One in five adult Canadians is currently living with arthritis, a range of painful, debilitating chronic health conditions that affect joints, bones and connective tissues. By 2040, that number is expected to rise by 50 per cent, affecting nearly a quarter of our population.
These shifting demographics currently leave a significant segment of the population with increasing levels of disability, which in turn limits career opportunities in the most productive years, affects relationships with family and friends, and profoundly impacts quality of life. Arthritis hits us where it hurts the most. This is a health care crisis, and we at the Schroder Arthritis Institute are on the front line of this battle.
The Schroeder Arthritis Institute is among the leading arthritis research enterprises bringing together our scientists, educators and clinicians to discover, to educate and to transform patient care. We are focussed on developing new treatments, diagnostic tests, and models of care, all with the goal of improving the lives of millions of patients living with arthritis. We have assembled a team of innovative arthritis researchers, clinician-scientists and educators who are global leaders in their fields.
The Schroeder Arthritis Institute is home to one of world’s largest tissue biobanks and clinical cohorts for arthritis. We employ high throughput technologies such as gene sequencing, metabolic and inflammatory profiling, and imaging, coupled with artificial intelligence to understand disease mechanisms, for the development of novel biomarkers and the discovery of new therapies. Our epidemiologists and population health experts are playing a leading role in defining new models of care to improve the lives of patients living with arthritis.
We are driven by a passion to make a difference in the lives of our patients – to diagnose them earlier and provide them with effective treatments, to help them better manage their symptoms and improve their mobility. Ultimately, we seek to enable them to achieve productive and fulfilled lives, free of pain and disability.
Today, there is no cure for arthritis. But we envision one for tomorrow.
Let's all work together to make this dream a reality.
