TeamUHN members have been honoured with prestigious Order of Canada appointments, recognizing their trailblazing work in patient care, medical advancements and scientific discovery.

Gov. Gen. Mary Simon announced 80 Order of Canada appointments, one of Canada's highest civilian honours, on December 31.

Appointees advancing medicine and science

Dr. Shaf Keshavjee, a thoracic surgeon and Chief of Innovation at UHN, was promoted to companion of the Order of Canada. He was appointed an officer of the Order of Canada in 2014.

Dr. Keshavjee's groundbreaking work has transformed transplant surgery around the world. Through his work in advancing lung preservation during transplant procedures, he is helping expand the field of regenerative medicine.

Dr. Allison McGeer, a clinician investigator at UHN and senior clinician scientist at the Sinai Health Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, was named a member of the Order of Canada. 

Dr. McGeer's work in epidemiology, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, helped shape national and global strategies for preventing infections.

"Every appointment celebrates not only the talent, expertise and dedication of individuals, but also the countless lives they have touched through their work, vision and contributions. Their commitment extends beyond borders, inspiring progress in our communities, our country and around the world," said Simon in a news release.
