Beginning December 2015, the National Building Code of Canada for stairs in homes increases from a minimum step depth of 8.25 to 10 inches, or 210 mm to 255 mm.
Toronto Rehab's iDAPT Centre for Rehabilitation Research worked with the National Building Code of Canada to provide evidence-based research to help inform this change, making stairs safer in homes.
This change could lead to an estimated 13,000 fewer injuries in the next five years.
