Thirty research teams at UHN have been awarded more than $22.5 million from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

CIHR announced the results of its Fall 2024 Project Grant funding competition on Jan. 31. The Project Grant program is designed to support ideas that will advance health-related knowledge, research methodologies, patient care and overall outcomes.

For this round of funding, the 30 successful research teams at UHN spanned 26 full research grants and four priority announcement grants.

Across Canada, 453 full research grants were funded for a total investment of $411 million. Additionally, 105 priority announcement grants received $14.1 million and 16 supplemental prizes were awarded $400,000.

Among the funded projects at UHN:


Dr. Quynh Pham

Dr. Quynh Pham, Director of the Centre for Digital Therapeutics​ at UHN and an affiliate scientist at Toronto General Hospital Research Institute, is expanding Medly, a proven digital heart failure management program, to sites across Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia to improve remote care and reduce hospitalizations.

Dr. Shane Harding

The team of Dr. Shane Harding, a Senior Scientist at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, is investigating how cancer treatments trigger cytokine release, a process that can influence immune responses and treatment side effects, to enhance therapy effectiveness.

Dr. Robert Chen

Dr. Robert Chen, a Senior Scientist at UHN's Krembil Research Institute, is advancing transcranial ultrasound stimulation as a non-invasive alternative to deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease, offering a potential breakthrough in treatment.

From improving traumatic brain injury screening to advancing lung transplant innovations, UHN researchers continue to push the boundaries of health research.
