In 2008, Dr. Megan Landes of the UHN Emergency Department got a call. Would she be interested in partnering with Addis Ababa University to establish an Emergency Medicine program in Ethiopia?
The challenge? At the time, Ethiopia had no academic program for teaching Emergency Medicine. Four years later, along with co-founder Dr. James Maskalyk of the Toronto Addis Ababa Academic Collaboration for Emergency Medicine (TAAAC), Dr. Landes is about to witness the first graduating class of Emergency doctors in a country of 80 million people. And equally important, the establishment of a teaching program that will train future doctors in Ethiopia, and beyond.
Dr. Landes' story demonstrates the UHN mission – Local Accountability, Global Impact.
