Congratulations to Lilian Navalta, (L), and Sadhana Shrestha, physiotherapists at UHN's West Park Healthcare Centre, who have been recognized for outstanding contributions to their field.

Lilian and Sadhana were recently honoured with Recognition Award from the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Toronto.

The award acknowledges individuals who have provided great learning environments, guidance, supervision or have been inspirational to students in the masters of physical therapy and bridging programs.

Recognition award recipients can be faculty members, clinical instructors, small group facilitators, lab demonstrators, teaching assistants or other educators.

 

Congratulations to Dr. Fatemeh Zabihollahy, an artificial intelligence (AI) research scientist at UHN's Toronto General Hospital Research Institute (TGHRI), for receiving a 2024 Cancer Digital Intelligence (CDI) Spark Award.

Dr. Zabihollahy works under the guidance of Dr. George Yousef, Program Medical Director of the Laboratory Medicine Program at UHN, and Dr. Neil Fleshner, professor and former Chair of the Division of Urology, University of Toronto. Her research is focused on the development of multi-modal AI for cancer diagnosis and prognosis.

The goal of the CDI Spark Award, which was announced in late July and runs from September 2024 to June 2025, is to support basic science research trainees across UHN in their projects by helping them leverage data science and machine learning expertise to uncover previously unseen trends in their data.

The CDI Spark Award will provide trainees with the expertise they need to conduct innovative research and create essential links within the scientific community, to continue to make impactful discoveries throughout their careers and help fuel leaders of Canada's scientific community.

 

Congratulations to Dr. Roger Goldstein, a respirologist, clinical researcher and Director of Respiratory Medicine at UHN's West Park Healthcare Centre, on receiving the coveted Faculty Research Excellence Award 2023-2024 from the Division of Respirology, Department of Medicine at University of Toronto (U of T).

An internationally-renowned expert in pulmonary rehabilitation and the management of chronic respiratory diseases, Dr. Goldstein provides inpatient and outpatient services across the full spectrum of care for individuals who require ongoing mechanical assistance to help them breathe.

As a professor in the Department of Medicine and Physical Therapy at U of T, Dr. Goldstein devotes a considerable amount of time to research, teaching and education to locally and internationally trained medical residents and research fellows. With more than 120 research publications, he values the importance of bringing research from the bench to the bedside.

In addition to providing clinical services onsite, Dr. Goldstein is Chair of the Centre's Research and Education Council, which guides its academic/research strategy, and serves as Director for the Divisional Program in Respiratory Rehab at U of T.

 

Congratulations to Dr. Dafna Gladman, Senior Rheumatologist and Senior Scientist at UHN's Schroeder Arthritis Institute and UHN's Krembil Research Institute, for receiving a Liftetime Achievement Award in the 2024 Dean's Alumni Awards from the University of Toronto's (U of T) Temerty Faculty of Medicine.

Over the last five decades, Dr. Gladman's scholarship, leadership, mentorship and advocacy efforts have raised Canada's profile as a global leader in the field of rheumatology, and her research has significantly advanced global understanding and treatment of both psoriatic arthritis and lupus.

Dr. Gladman, a clinician-scientist doing both clinical and translation research primarily at Toronto Western Hospital, is also a professor in the Faculty of Medicine at U of T and served as Director of the university's rheumatology program from 1992 to 2005. In 2004, U of T established the Dafna Gladman Award in recognition of her dedication to mentoring, counselling and academic medicine.

Dr. Gladman has also received numerous awards, including the 2015 Mentor of the Year Award from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and the Distinguished Clinical Investigator Award from the American College of Rheumatology and Canadian Rheumatology Association.

Congratulations to Dr. Sarah Brode, Physician Lead for the Tuberculosis Service at UHN's West Park Healthcare Centre, for receiving the University of Toronto (U of T), Division of Respirology, Sheldon Mintz Undergraduate Teaching Award.

Dr. Brode is an experienced respirologist with a specialized focus in the areas of tuberculosis (TB) and infectious diseases. West Park is a provincially designated treatment centre for difficult-to-treat cases of TB and other mycobacterial infections.

In addition to clinical services onsite, Dr. Brode is an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at U of T as well as a staff respirologist at UHN. Her research focuses on epidemiology, treatment and outcomes in TB and nontuberculous mycobacteria.

Dr. Brode obtained her medical degree from U of T in 2007, and then went on to complete postgraduate training in internal medicine and respirology, and a clinical/research fellowship in mycobacterial disease at U of T.
