One evening when Humberto Laranjo was working in the emergency department, a patient was brought in who was hit by a car. The man was seriously injured and in a coma.
When the patient's dad told Humberto his son was a big Toronto Maple Leafs fan, Humberto began sharing the score of each Leafs game with the patient.
When the man finally came out of a coma, he immediately recognized Humberto’s voice. Incredibly, he remembered what Humberto had told him -- and laughed about his team's less than stellar results.
For Humberto, it was a meaningful lesson in the power of voice.
