​​On October 1, 2013, UHN will celebrate a significant milestone in its history with the dedication of the Peter Munk Building at Toronto General Hospital.

Peter and Melanie Munk have profoundly affected cardiac care in Canada and around the world. They have illustrated how individuals, foundations, the ​private sector and government can work together to support excellence in health care and research. Thanks to the ongoing and transformational generosity of Peter and Melanie Munk, UHN is home to North America’s premier cardiac centre.

  • 1993 – Peter and Melanie commit a $5 million donation to kick-​start the hospital’s first Cardiac Centre Campaign.
  • 1997 – Peter and Melanie establish the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at Toronto General Hospital, marking the beginning of a new era for cardiac care in Canada. Not only did the Munk’s generosity create a world-renowned centre, it also established UHN’s first endowed Chair for the cardiac program: the Melanie Munk Chair in Cardiovascular Surgery.
  • 2001 – UHN launches the Together We Make Life Better campaign. Peter and Melanie served as Honorary Co-Chairs of the Heart and Circulation effort, which had a goal of $100 million and raised more than $107 million.
  • 2006 – A donation of $37 million by Peter and Melanie Munk to UHN is the largest single donation to a hospital in Canadian history. The gift has enabled the PMCC to revolutionize the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease.
  • 2011 – Peter and Melanie Munk donate an additional $18 million to the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, bringing their total investment to an astounding $65 million at UHN. This gift will support innovation, recruitment and retention of top cardiac talent. It will help train top minds in cardiovascular medicine, surgery and imaging from around the globe.
  • ​2013 – In recognition of Peter Munk​’s outstanding contribution to cardiac care at UHN, the Clinical Services building at Toronto General Hospital is now named the Peter Munk Building.
