Hi everyone,

We begin the New Year with a gift of recognition for key members of the "UHN Family". On December 30, 2008, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, honoured three UHN'ers with appointments to the Order of Canada.

Dr. Michael Baker, who has just completed a remarkable term as UHN's Physician in Chief, was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada for his contributions to health care- including his leadership of Canada's largest Department of Medicine, his clinical and research work in hematological malignancy, his efforts in developing an integrated cancer program at UHN and for his provincial leadership in the area of patient safety. As you know, Michael is currently serving as the Executive Lead in Patient Safety for Ontario's Ministry of Health.

Mr. David Brown, a member of UHN's Board of Trustees, was also appointed a Member of the Order of Canada. Mr. Brown was recognized for his work in the securities industry and for his extensive volunteer work in health care. His involvement with our organization dates back to his time as a member of the Princess Margaret Hospital Board prior to the formation of UHN. David has done extensive work on governance at UHN and this work was the foundation for our award for corporate governance from the Conference Board of Canada. He currently serves as Deputy Chair of UHN's Board of Trustees.

Finally, Mr. Peter Munk was elevated to a Companion of the Order of Canada - the highest level of Canada's honours system. The Companion Award recognizes an individual's lifetime of achie vements- thanks to Peter's life-long generosity, vision and commitment, the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at Toronto General Hospital is a world-class centre in cardiovascular care and research.

Congratulations to Michael, David and Peter!

Bob
