Dear Colleagues:

During one of my last Patient Safety walk-arounds, a very intelligent and inquisitive staff nurse asked me “Why are you always sending out Straight Talks about the Balanced Scorecard…what is the Balanced Scorecard?” This question made me realize that now might be as good a time as any to take a step back and share with everyone the “what“ and “why” of the Balanced Scorecard.

The Balanced Scorecard, or BSC, is tied directly to UHN’s strategic objectives. It is a tool that we use to measure whether or not we are achieving the goals that we set out in our strategic plan.  The red-yellow-green stop-light system provides us with a quick snapshot of how we are doing.  Green indicates that we are on track to achieving our goals, while red signifies the need to re-focus and implement initiatives that will help us get back on track.

The Senior Management Team would like you to be interested in learning about our results. You may be asking “why is this important to me and the work that I do?” Achieving our strategic plan requires the hard work and contributions from staff across the hospital. It is your continued effort that contributes to our quarterly results.Thank you all for your dedication and support towards achieving UHN’s vision and mission.

The Senior Management Team would like to share with you the Image of PDF IconBalanced Scorecard - 2011-12 Q3 release. We have also included a Image of PDF IconGlossary - Balanced Scorecard Terms for your reference. Thank you,
Bob
