Hi everyone,

You may be startled to learn that over one-third of staff are susceptible to becoming diabetic (UHN wellness survey Oct 2006). Exercise such as walking is a great way to reduce your risk of diabetes and other lifestyle diseases while enjoying the company of family and friends outdoors. With this in mind, University Health Network's Wellness program is excited to announce its upcoming summer event – the Step by Step Walking Challenge!

Once you register for the Walking Challenge you will receive a pedometer and a Step Kit and access to the online tracking site. Select a trail for your level of fitness and begin logging your activity. Track your progress for 4 weeks and receive your T-shirt if you accomplish a weekly average of 10,000 steps/day. You can walk on your own or 2-Step with a partner. Log on to UHN Intranet>Human Resources>Wellness, clip on a pedometer and walk up to 10,000 steps a day! You'll be surprised at how tracking your own progress becomes incentive in itself.

Welcome to the 2007 UHN Family Campaign

This year, our three foundations are in step with UHN Wellness! The Walking Challenge is part of the UHN Family Campaign. Registration for the Challenge is $20. You may choose to direct 50 percent of this fee to Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation, Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation and Arthritis & Autoimmunity Research Centre Foundation in support of research.Every step you take will improve your wellness and the health of our patients!

Also, look for your Family Campaign pledge form with your May 31 pay statement and consider signing up for payroll deduction to help your hospitals year round. You'll be supporting research that benefits us all.

Thank you for 'stepping up' – for yourself and for your hospitals!

Bob Bell, President and CEO, UHN
