Dear Colleagues,

Today, the provincial government announced the creation of 31 new Family Health Teams (FHTs). Designed around the needs of the community, a FHT consists of a multidisciplinary group of health professionals including doctors, dieticians, pharmacists, social workers, mental health workers, nurse practitioners and other allied health professionals. These teams have been created by the Ministry as an initiative to enhance access to primary health services.

I'm pleased that the UHN Family and Community Medicine Team under the leadership of Dr. Louise Nasmith (Interim Chief of Family and Community Medicine), has been approved to create an academic FHT called the Toronto Western Hospital Family Health Team Centre. This Family Health Team will build on the expertise of our interdisciplinary primary care model and will undoubtedly serve as a model for the system. I am delighted that our excellent team has been recognized in this Ministry announcement.
