 What We Do

  • Provide Toronto Rehab – UHN patients access to innovative assessments and treatments developed through research at Toronto Rehab, including:
    • technology-based assessments (e.g., force plates, computerized gait mats) of balance and walking;
    • novel "perturbation-based" balance training to improve balance reactions and reduce the risk of falls;
    • cardiopulmonary exercise testing to inform safe and optimal exercise during rehab;
    • self-management groups to build an individualized plan for long-term engagement in exercise and physical activity after rehab; and
    • opportunities to participate in research.
  • Provide the opportunity for researchers, health care professionals and patients and families to work as partners in the development of evidence-informed, clinically meaningful and feasible treatments and programs of care.
  • Share what we have learned and support the implementation of new practices across other rehab settings through education and consultation.
  • Conduct ongoing research to continue to develop new knowledge and innovative approaches to optimize outcomes for those with mobility challenges.

Who We Are

The Mobility Innovations Centre was designed to partner clinicians and researchers in the Brain and Spinal Cord Rehabilitation Program to collaboratively develop and use new knowledge and novel approaches to optimize outcomes for people with balance and mobility challenges. The Centre provides a hub for knowledge exchange and a platform to evaluate and develop new innovations within real clinical settings and then more immediately make these assessments and treatments available to the patients within our care.
