UHN’s Privacy Office

UHN’s Privacy Office is committed to protecting the privacy of personal information under the custody or control of UHN in accordance with Ontario’s Health Information Protection Act, public expectations for privacy and internationally accepted fair information principles. The Health Information Protection Act, comprised of both the Personal Health Information Protection Act and the Quality of Care Information Protection Act, came into effect November 1, 2004.

The Office consists of a Corporate Privacy Officer (CPO) and a privacy team that is educated and trained to provide privacy guidance in the health care field. We were established at UHN to be a resource for privacy information, for policy development, including the UHN privacy policy, and for educating all UHN staff, patients and visitors on privacy issues.

Educating UHN about our Privacy Policy

We continually conduct privacy training sessions for UHN staff, volunteers, and students. These sessions:

  • Provide guidance and interpretation regarding the Health Information Protection Act, 2004
  • Explain the UHN Privacy Policy
  • Present practical tips for handling common situations involving access, use and disclosure of personal health information
  • Answer questions about privacy and patient confidentiality issues
