 What We Do

PESU is a safe and secure environment designed to provide evidenced-based and holistic services to people who are experiencing a mental health crisis. Individuals in need of mental health care are triaged directly into PESU from the Emergency Department, where they are seen by experts in mental health and addictions. The team composed of staff psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, psychiatric assistants, clinicians, residents and students work collaboratively to conduct assessments and interventions for each patient, manage patient transition throughout the services, provide linkages to community agencies and facilitate ongoing treatment. In collaboration with the Toronto Western and Toronto General Emergency Departments, PESU staff strive to ensure that mental health patients in crisis receive timely access to the appropriate service. PESU also is connected to and knowledgeable on available community resources to help patients outside of UHN.
