General Internal Medicine & Geriatrics Team

The Division of General Internal Medicine & Geriatrics is comprised of two groups of physician specialists: Internal Medicine (IM) physicians and geriatricians. We have 68 full-time faculty across three sites: Toronto Western Hospital, Toronto General Hospital and Sinai Health System. Our specialists are leaders at the local, national and international level. Not only do we provide this in our inpatient clinical teaching units, but our faculty are also renowned researchers in fields such as quality improvement, innovation, health equity, and health services research.

Clinically, Internal Medicine specialists are the "Swiss Army Knife" of medicine – a nimble team of problem solvers who diagnose and care for patients with complex multisystem medical conditions. They are experts at the diagnosis and management of both acute and chronic multisystem diseases. During the height of the pandemic, this included leading the hospital's COVID-19 physicians alongside colleagues in critical care and emergency medicine – 70 per cent of inpatient COVID-19 care was provided by our division.

 Inpatient Clinical Care

Patients often have complex medical conditions and need an extensive level of care with admission to hospital on our General Internal Medicine inpatient wards. Patients may need a diagnosis for a challenging set of symptoms, or have multiple complex medical conditions that involve more than one organ. They may require coordinated care with multiple physicians and healthcare team members such as social workers, occupational and physical therapists.

The typical internal medicine patient has 4-5 chronic medical conditions and is taking upwards of 10+ medications.

Internal Medicine patients are often frail, elderly and economically disadvantaged, and a significant percentage do not speak English.

Our Internal Medicine patient wards are the largest inpatient units UHN and are located at both Toronto General Hospital (~100 beds) and Toronto Western Hospital sites (~100 beds). Together, the Internal Medicine service is responsible for over 50 per cent of all patients hospitalized at UHN, including those who come through our two Emergency Departments.

Embedded within these wards are our Clinical Teaching Units, where our Faculty physicians provide foundational training to medical students and resident education for our inpatients. We also have our Acute Inpatient Medicine (AIM) Service, where patients are cared for directly by physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners with specific expertise in hospital medicine.

Our division also provides on-call specialty consult advice to other programs in the hospital with our Medical Consults Service and our Geriatrics Consult Service – where our team provides medical and geriatric expertise to patients admitted to other wards in the hospital, including programs such as surgical services, psychiatry and oncology.
