Dermato-oncology

1 in 6 Canadians will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime and each year 85,000 Canadians will be diagnosed with skin cancer. All Canadians with risk factors for skin cancer should be checked by their family doctor who will then refer to a dermatologist if there are any concerns. Practice sun and skin awareness. Perform regular self-checks so that you are familiar with your skin. That way you’ll notice changes. Then, report them to your doctor without delay.

Promptly show your doctor any:

  • Suspicious skin area
  • Sore that doesn’t heal
  • Change in a mole or freckle

The Dermatologists at the Toronto Western Hospital are specialized in diagnosing and treating all forms of skin cancer as well as the skin needs of patients with other forms of cancer and its treatment:

  • Precancers (actinic keratosis and Bowen’s disease)
  • Lymphoma
  • Basal cell carcinoma
  • Melanoma
  • Squamous cell carcinoma
  • Rare skin cancers
  • High-risk skin cancer
  • Patients at high risk for developing skin cancer (due to immunosuppressant therapy or other factors)

We also work closely with UHN oncologists to provide treatments for skin conditions resulting from any type of cancer:

  • Skin, hair, and nail changes due to cancer treatment
  • Radiation dermatitis
  • Skin infections or side effects due to cancer treatment
