What We Do

We provide genetic assessments and genetic counselling for people who may be at risk of hereditary conditions based on their medical or family history. Your doctor may recommend that you come for a genetics appointment if:

  • You have been diagnosed with a genetic condition
  • You are concerned that you might have a genetic condition
  • Several of your family members have the same medical problem, and you are concerned about what it might mean for you or your children
  • You have questions about family planning because of a genetic condition in your or your partner's family
  • You have questions about genetic testing

About Genetic Conditions

Many genetic conditions are very rare. The following are some of the broad categories of conditions for which we offer assessments and counselling:

  • Connective tissue disorders (Marfan syndrome, Loeys-Dietz syndrome)
  • Hereditary heart diseases (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy)
  • Hereditary kidney diseases (polycystic kidney disease)
  • Ocular diseases (retinitis pigmentosa, Stargardt’s disease)
  • Inherited metabolic diseases (Fabry disease, glycogen storage diseases, mucopolysaccharidoses)
  • Inherited neurological disorders (spinocerebellar ataxia, hereditary spastic paraparesis, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease)

Tests & Services

  • Comprehensive medical assessments for people who may have a genetic condition
  • Genetic counselling regarding the chances of inheriting a known genetic condition in the family, or the chances of passing on a genetic condition to children
  • Genetic testing, when recommended
  • Ongoing medical management for people diagnosed with inherited metabolic diseases (such as Fabry disease, urea cycle defects, glycogen storage diseases or other lysosomal storage diseases)
