What to Expect

How to Prepare

Do not take any laxatives, enemas or antibiotics for one week before the stool collection unless permitted by your physician.

Instructions for the Stool Collection for Culture

Pass the stool on a dry, clean surface such as a chamber pot, plastic bag or newspaper. Do not contaminate stool with water, urine, soap, detergent or disinfectant. Using the spoon provided, add approximately two teaspoon equivalents to the collection container. Take small portions from each end and middle of the stool, especially sampling areas of the stool which contain mucus, blood, or pus. Be sure the stool is completely submerged in the gel-like medium present in the container.

It is important to follow these directions when collecting your stool specimen to get accurate results:

  • Replace the cap on the container securely.
  • Wash hands.
  • Ensure the specimen is labelled with your full name.
  • Take the specimen container to the laboratory.
  • If immediate delivery is not possible, refrigerate stool specimen until delivery is possible. The specimen must be returned within a day of collection.
