 What to Expect

How to Prepare

Follow the dietary requirements listed below for 2 days prior to the test and during the test. Other foods not listed that are normally consumed may be eaten.

Foods to Eat

  • Well-cooked meats, poultry and fish
  • Bran cereal daily
  • Cooked fruits and vegetables
  • Peanuts and popcorn

Food Restrictions

  • NO rare red meat (beef, lamb, etc.)
  • NO turnips, melons or horseradish

Drug and Vitamin Restrictions

  • NO vitamin C in excess of 250 mg per day
  • NO aspirin, aspirin-containing products, anti-inflammatory drugs or iron supplements

Note: If following any part of the dietary requirements is a problem, consult your physician.

Instructions for the collection of Occult Blood Test

  • Make sure your name is on the cardboard collection kit.
  • Pass the stool on a dry, clean surface such as a chamber pot, plastic bag or newspaper.
  • Do not contaminate stool with water, urine, soap, detergent or disinfectant.
  • Open front of cardboard kit (where patient name is written). Do not open the back of the kit.
  • Use wooden stick to scrap a THIN FILM of stool over window "A" on the inside of the cardboard kit.
  • Repeat procedure for window "B".
  • Close the collection kit and bring it to the reception desk at the Diagnostic Test Centre, as well as your health card (OHIP card) to register for the test. If you do not have an OHIP card, please bring another form of government-issued photo ID (such as a driver's license, passport, or other provincial health card).
  • If you are unable to bring the test back immediately, store the cardboard kit in the refrigerator until delivery is possible.

The Results of the Occult Blood Test

The technologist cannot give you the results during your visit. If you have any questions or concerns, please discuss them with the laboratory staff on duty at 416 340 3968.​
