What to Expect

How to Prepare

You will be required to fast for 10-12 hours. This means nothing to eat or drink except water, including no gum. A blood specimen will be drawn prior to drinking the glucose drink at the laboratory.

Checking-in

When you arrive at the Diagnostic Test Centre/Blood Collection Lab, check-in at the reception desk. Please have the following ready:

  • Health card (OHIP card). If you do not have an OHIP card, please bring another form of government-issued photo ID (such as a driver's license, passport or other provincial health card). Please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment.
  • Your name, address and birth date.

Instructions for the Glucose Tolerance Test

You will be given a bottle of glucose to drink. When you finish it, your test begins. Since you must remain until testing is done, you may wish to bring reading material. If you are not feeling well at any time during the test, please inform the lab staff. You cannot eat, drink, chew gum, smoke or exercise during the test.

Note: If you feel nauseous at any point during the test, notify the receptionist or technician.

The Results of Your Glucose Tolerance Test

Results of this test will be returned directly to your doctor.

How Long Will Your Appointment Be?

This test will take either 3, 4 or 5 hours depending on the length of tolerance ordered.

We do everything that we can to stay on time. Unfortunately, your appointment may be delayed by unforeseen circumstances. We recommend that you come prepared for delays.

If you have any questions or concerns, please discuss them with the Laboratory staff on duty at 416 340 3968.
