 Your Procedure

How to Prepare

Please bring with you a list of your current medications. This includes prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, vitamin or mineral supplements and herbal remedies.

DO NOT sleep for 24 hours before your appointment.

You may eat a normal diet but DO NOT drink any beverages with caffeine (coffee, tea, power drinks, colas) after 3 pm.

Take your medications as prescribed by your doctor EXCEPT no sleeping pills.

Shampoo and dry your hair before the appointment. Do not apply gels, hair spray, oils etc. to your hair. Braids of your own hair are allowed, but weaves and extensions MUST be removed.

Checking In

When you arrive at the Neurophysiology Lab, check in at the reception desk. Please have the following ready:

  • Health card (OHIP card). If you do not have an OHIP card, please bring another form of government-issued photo ID (such as a driver's license, passport or other provincial health card). Please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment.
  • Your name, address and birth date

During and After the Sleep Deprived EEG

About 25-30 small discs are placed on your scalp using cream and tape prior to the test. During the test, you will be asked to lie down and stay still.

When the test is complete, most of the cream will be removed with warm water. You may wish to wash your hair later. Please bring your own comb or brush as these are not provided.

How Long Will Your Appointment Be?

The recording takes about 30 minutes but you will be in the room for about 1-1 ½ hours.
