 What We Do

Neuropsychology treats and assesses the structure and functions of the brain as they relate to specific psychological processes and behaviours, such as memory and cognitive abilities. Neuropsychologists work with patients on various neurological issues including epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, head injuries and stroke.

We conduct cognitive assessments that describe your strengths and weaknesses in your memory and thinking abilities. It can identify problems that are linked to your particular neurological condition. This can help in deciding a diagnosis, deciding on a proper therapy or surgery and identifying strategies to help you cope with your difficulties.

Special Procedures

We also do special procedures for some patients being considered for brain surgery. These include MRI studies where we map language, motor and memory functions in the brain and the Wada procedure which evaluates which side of the brain is responsible for certain vital cognitive functions, namely speech and memory.

How to Prepare

A neuropsychological assessment takes the better part of a day, with a lunch break and any other breaks as needed. A follow-up appointment, to discuss the assessment results, is typically 30 to 45 minutes. We can do this by telephone or videoconferencing if you prefer.

For patients who require a functional MRI, this visit takes place in the medical imaging department on the 3rd floor and not in the clinic. This visit typically lasts around 90 minutes, including check-in and the instruction period.

Materials and Resources to Help You

 Meet Our Team

Neuropsychologists are key members of our teams at the Krembil Brain Institute, primarily in the Epilepsy and Movement Disorders programs. We bring a unique perspective on brain function to help make effective medical and surgical decisions. Our training as clinician-scientists allows us to foster the development and advancement of research knowledge in those programs.

Neuropsychologists conduct clinical interviews, supervise evaluations, interpret results and communicate findings to you and your doctor.

Neuropsychologists are specifically trained to understand brain function and how different disorders may affect memory, problem-solving, concentration, language and behaviour. They work with trained Psychometrists and student trainees who administer the cognitive tests.
