Legacy and Leadership

History

In 1986, the University of Toronto and University Health Network collaboratively embarked on the journey to start Canada's first Hand Program. Our skilled surgeons are trained in Orthopaedic and/or Plastic surgery with Fellowships in Hand and Upper Extremity, Plastics, Peripheral Nerve and Microsurgery.

Physicians of Impact

Dr. Anastakis obtained his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1988 and completed his Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery training at UofT in 1995. Later, he completed his fellowship in Lausanne, Switzerland, as an R.S. McLaughlin Fellow. Dr. Anastakis is recognized for the implementation of strategic visions, collaborative partnerships and growth strategies. His clinical practice focuses on brachial plexus and peripheral nerve surgery and reconstruction of the paralyzed upper extremity.

In 1961, Dr. Friedberg joined the University of Toronto, and in 1979 joined the Hand Clinic at the Toronto Western Hospital. He started the Thursday evening seminar for the residency-training program and established the first Resident Aesthetic Surgery Clinic.

"A Pioneer of Hand Surgery"

Dr. Ralph Manktelow was the first surgeon in Toronto to begin the development of microvascular surgery. From 1979 to 1996, Dr. Manktelow was the Chief of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Toronto General Hospital. In 1986, he assumed the position of Division Chair from Dr. W. K. Lindsay. As an observer, Dr. Manktelow travelled to China to learn about their techniques in the field. During his time as chief, he was recognized as an authority in replantation and microvascular surgery. In 1984, he performed the first segmental microneurovascular muscle transfer for facial paralysis. Dr. Manktelow performed the first hand re-plantation and finger replantation in Canada.

Dr. Ralph Manktelow received the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons Lifetime Achievement Award in June 2010. Additionally, in 2010, the International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand (IFSSH) honoured and named him the Pioneer of Hand Surgery.

Dr. McCabe was an active member of the American Society for Reconstructive Transplantation and the International Hand Composite Tissue Allotransplantation Society. In 1999, Dr. McCabe was part of the Louisville, Kentucky team that completed the first upper extremity transplant. In 2016, Dr. McCabe led a phenomenal team of surgeons who successfully completed the first hand Transplant in Canada.

Dr. Von Schroder completed two clinical fellowships, obtaining highly specialized training in hand, wrist and microsurgery. These fellowships were at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and C.M. Kleinhert Institute for Hand and Microsurgery Louisville, Kentucky. He is an Associate Professor in the Division of Plastic and Orthopaedic Surgery, Department of Surgery.
