What We Do

The Spondylitis Screening Clinic uses a new model of care created to assist in the early detection of axial spondyloarthritis (axial SpA). Axial SpA is a form of autoimmune disease that causes an inflammatory arthritis of the spine. Often patients with axial SpA wait unnecessarily for appropriate diagnosis and intervention which can lead to avoidable pain and disability. The Spondylitis Screening Clinic provides a comprehensive assessment by advanced practice physiotherapists who have specialized training in this form of back pain. The advanced practice physiotherapists work closely with the rheumatologists associated with the Ankylosing Spondylitis Clinic at the Schroeder Arthritis Institute.

Adult patients with back pain lasting more than 3 months that started before the age of 45 are eligible for evaluation at the Spondylitis Screening Clinic.

Tests/Services

Patients referred to the program will be evaluated by an advanced practice physiotherapist with expertise in the area of spondyloarthritis. The evaluation will include a detailed history, physical examination, laboratory studies and x-rays. If the evaluation results are suggestive of axial spondyloarthritis, a rheumatology consult will be arranged and a final diagnosis will be made.
