The Toronto Western Research Institute (TWRI) is the research arm of Toronto Western Hospital and is home to a number of research programs in the neural and visual sciences, musculoskeletal disease and urban and community health priorities.
TWRI scientists explore the function of the nervous system as they develop treatments for spinal cord injuries, cerebral ischemia, vascular malformations, brain tumours, neuro-ophthalmologic disorders and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. They investigate the causes of and potential therapies for arthritis and associated degenerative diseases. They also study the basic mechanisms of vision in health and disease with the goal of eliminating blindness and impaired vision in humans.
