Good Monday morning – and let's go Raptors! TONIGHT WE WILL MAKE HISTORY!

Reminder to join our annual celebration this Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. – Report to Our Community, formerly known as the AGM (Annual General Meeting).

1. Highlights on UHN's Essentials

UHN's Essentials are essential to the work we do as a leading academic health sciences centre – hence the name! Read here to learn more. Below, you'll find highlights on UHN's Essentials from last week.

People and Culture Attending UHN's Patient Partner Appreciation Event – and running into an old friend: Round of applause for our Patient Partners who contributed to more than 140 initiatives last year at UHN. Thank you to Joy Richards (Vice President, Patient Experience), Laura Williams (Director, Patient Engagement), and the Patient Partnerships team including Becky Quinlan, Alicia Goorbarry, Abi Ananthamurugan and Kerseri Scane for their work. They've done an excellent job of building meaningful partnerships between patients, families and TeamUHN. It was also a distinct pleasure reuniting with my friend Sara, who I've known since she was 10! She is now shaping our work at UHN as a Patient Partner.

Technology Code Grey – TeamUHN carries on like clockwork while information systems were down: We experienced a Code Grey last week which included our PHS (our electronic patient scheduling system) which means we weren't able to schedule patient appointments digitally as we normally do. A huge thank you to everyone including staff in outpatient clinics, managers and leadership for working through this incident to ensure continuity of care for patients. We also express heartfelt thanks to our colleagues in UHN Digital who worked tirelessly day and night in partnership with clinical colleagues to resolve the issue, which started Wednesday morning. We were able to call an all clear by Friday morning.

People and Culture Our strong philanthropic community and Foundations partner to raise critical research funding: I'll take this opportunity to thank our colleagues at all three Foundations who work hard to execute so many events year round. Event planning can be stressful but you make it seem effortless and create such memorable experiences for our donor community.

  • The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer: $19.2M raised for Princess Margaret Cancer Centre thanks to 4,573 riders plus their donors and the incredible volunteers.
  • Golf for Heart Classic: $400K was raised at the sold-out event for UHN's Peter Munk Cardiac Centre!

People and Culture One thought that stays with me following North York General Hospital's (NYGH) Board retreat: I was honoured to be asked to speak to the NYGH Board at their retreat. A very impressive hospital and team. Biggest discussion point was the importance of getting started and not waiting for perfect conditions. This is especially true in times of uncertainty. Remember "change is the only constant" so it's important we raise our risk tolerance and not hold back when it comes to delivering better care for patients and families. Thanks to Joshua Tepper (CEO, NYGH) for inviting me to discuss integration and clinical research alongside Georgina Black (Partner, KPMG).

People and Culture TeamUHN outdid themselves at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting: Congratulations to all award recipients including Marco Iafolla, Monika Krzyzanowska, Natasha Leighl, Stephanie Lheureux, Eoghan Malone, Marc Olivia, Kirstin Perdrizet, Isabel Pimentel, Ian Tannock (special shout out here for Ian as the winner of the Allen S. Lichter Visionary Leader Award) – and hats off to all those who presented their impressive work.

Quality and Safety Two Emergency Department colleagues master the triple aim for TeamUHN training – simple, quick and effective: Chocolate, pudding and glow germ powder were key ingredients to the creative HAC (Hospital Acquired Conditions) prevention activities designed by Brittany Jenkins (Toronto Western Hospital Emergency Department Advanced Practice Nurse Educator) and Erica Susky (Infection Control Practitioner). Find out about their approach on UHN News. Great story!

3. Best practices of healthcare organizations around the world – information and resources available to TeamUHN.

UHN is a member of Advisory Board, a global best practices firm that offers resources to improve the performance of healthcare organizations around the world. This means everyone on TeamUHN has access to their resources including toolkits, presentations, and customized answers to pressing questions (which can save us time and effort in our work while applying best practices).

To create a free UHN account, follow this link and press 'Log In' in the upper right-hand corner. We also have a dedicated account manager, Adam Lamantia (LamantiA@advisory.com), who is happy to email with you or arrange a call to explain more.

Have a good week,

Kevin
