What We Do

Nontuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM) are environmental germs that are found widely in water (especially in drinking water systems), soils and other environments. While it's common to come into contact with NTM, getting an infection from them is rare.

At the UHN NTM program, we have expertise in treating pulmonary and extrapulmonary NTM infections.

The most common type of NTM infection happens in the lungs, especially in people with lung conditions like bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis, or certain immune system issues. These infections can be long-lasting and tough to treat, often needing multiple antibiotics for about 18 months or more.

NTM can also infect other parts of the body, but this is less common. For example, skin and soft tissue infections can occur in people with weakened immune systems or after surgery.
