Service Reduction at UHN
UHN continues to manage our activities to balance the needs of our patients with public health measures. This helps us ensure we are keeping our patients and TeamUHN safe, and ensures we reserve capacity for any potential increase in COVID-19 patients. In light of the current COVID-19 rates in the community, and its subsequent impact on ICU capacity, as of January 18, 2021, UHN is reducing both surgical and procedural services. Patients will be informed directly by their clinic of any changes to appointments. We will continue to keep you informed as the situation evolves.
Please note: UHN's No Visitor policy remains in effect, with exceptions for pre-approved Essential Care Partners. Non-patients are not permitted without prior approval. To learn more,
see our COVID-19 Visitor Guidelines.
We know the service delays that have been caused by COVID-19 have led to anxiety for some patients and their families. We thank you for your ongoing patience and cooperation.
We continue to ensure we have the ability to maintain:
- proper physical distancing inside UHN spaces
- a safe supply of essential drugs
- a safe supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) for staff, patients and essential care partners.
To continue to allow for physical distancing in UHN spaces, and to reduce the amount of people inside our hospitals, UHN will continue to offer
virtual visits when safe and appropriate to do so.
Your care team will talk with you about what type of care may be right for you. Learn more about
virtual care at UHN.

Everyone entering UHN is being screened for symptoms of COVID-19, recent travel outside of Canada, and close contact with people who have COVID-19.
UHN screening staff are at each entrance. Patients who have symptoms will still be permitted to access the hospital. Essential Care Partners who have symptoms will not be allowed to enter.
Please answer the questions of our entrance screeners honestly. If you do not "pass" the screening, it does not mean you won't be allowed to enter. Screening staff will talk to you about taking extra precautions to keep you, other patients, and our staff safe.
Everyone must also clean their hands using the hand sanitizer provider, and put on a mask.
Are you receiving cancer treatment or have you had a multi-organ transplant? If you are, in the past 20 days, have you had any of the following symptoms?

- Decrease/loss of taste or smell
- Unexplained fatigue, malaise, muscle aches

Online Screening Tool for Patients
Use the new online self-screening tool:
uhnpatientscreen.ca
- When you arrive at the hospital, go to
uhnpatientscreen.ca on your mobile device.
- Answer the questions about COVID-19 symptoms, close contact, and recent travel.
- Show your final screen to our entrance screening staff. This screen will have a date, time and either say PASS, or will ask you to speak further with staff.
Note: this tool is for
patients with appointments only. Visitors must be screened by entrance screening staff. If you do not receive a PASS screen, you will still be allowed to enter, but you may be asked take extra precautions to get to your appointment safely.
- When you care provider calls you to confirm your appointment, they will provide you with an arrival time.
- Please do not try to enter the hospital more than 15 minutes before this arrival time, unless you are required to complete blood work in advance of your appointment.
- Please be aware that screening at the doors will take extra time.
- If you arrive early, please wait outside in an area where you can physically distance from others, such as in your vehicle or in an open public space. Please do not stand close to our entrance doors, as this may impact staff and patients who need to enter safely.
-
Everyone entering UHN must wear a mask. You will be given a medical-grade mask by screening staff. If you are wearing a mask from home, screening staff will give you a medical mask to wear instead. Patients must wear a mask at all times while inside the hospital, including inpatients when leaving their room. This policy also applies to pre-approved visitors, vendors, suppliers and contractors. This helps reduce the spread of COVID-19.
- Masks are provided at each entrance.
- Please make sure your mask covers your nose and mouth at all times. Only remove it if you must eat or drink, or at the request of your care team.
- Mask exemption cards are not accepted at UHN. Medical exemptions will only be considered for patients. If you have a legitimate medical condition that prevents you from wearing a mask, contact your UHN doctor or nurse practitioner’s office before your appointment. If your exemption is approved, you will receive a Face Mask Exemption Form. You must show this form to the entrance screeners when you come to the hospital. You will be given a face shield to wear instead.
- Entrance screeners are not able to give Face Mask Exemption Forms at the hospital doors. There are no exemptions to the Universal Masking Policy for Essential Care Partners or other visitors at this time.
UHN has implemented measures at all sites to encourage physical distancing which requires accommodating a distance of at least 2 metres between patients, visitors and staff.
Please follow the guidelines and signs at all our sites to help support this safety measure.
These include:
Waiting Rooms — signs posted and roping off every other chair in waiting rooms if available; more signs for lining up, checking in and waiting safely
Hallways — signs and markers asking you to "walk on the right"
Elevators — signs showing how many people are permitted in each elevator
Line-ups — tape or markers on the floor to show you how far apart to stand
Food Courts — seating is still closed but vendors are open
Public Seating — limited seating is available but we encourage people not to use public seating areas, unless needed
