In any job, especially ones as demanding as those in healthcare, there will inevitably be moments of frustration and even times when you ask yourself, "why am I doing this?" The thing that got me through those tough moments when I was working at MD Anderson was the organization's purpose – "Making Cancer History". I was captivated by the mission and comforted with the knowledge that the work I was doing was aligned with the core of the organization I worked for.

In Joey Reiman's book, The Story of Purpose, he tells us that purpose is "… an intention that creates a contribution." I firmly believe that all of us in UHN demonstrate this every day. This is why I am so excited that we will be kicking off our Purpose Values and Principles Open House next week (dates and times are below).

The PVP Open Houses will give you an opportunity to drop-in and provide your thoughts on the draft of our Purpose and Values and share ideas with us on how UHN can live out our purpose and values through guiding principles. Once the open houses wrap up, we will be taking your thoughts and incorporating them into our final Purpose, Values and Principles, which will be shared in June at the Annual General Meeting.

By refreshing our purpose, values and principles and ensuring they reflect UHN as a whole, on the days when it's tough and you're thinking "why am I doing this", you can lean on UHN's purpose.
