Day Before Your Operation

Exclamation mark

Stop drinking and eating by midnight the night before your operation. Your stomach needs to be empty.

What should I do the day before my operation?
  • You must have a shower with soap and water to clean your skin the night before and the morning of your surgery to reduce the chance of infection after your operation.
  • Remove all nail polish and body piercings.
  • If you smoke, do not do so for 24 hours before your operation.
  • Do not drink alcohol for 24 hours before your operation.

Planning ahead will make it easier to come home and start your recovery. Here are some things you can do ahead of time:

  • Make arrangements ahead of time for someone to take you home. You will not be allowed to go home by yourself after your operation.
  • If you live alone, plan for someone to stay and help you for at least a couple of days.
  • Get groceries and banking done a few days before your operation.
  • Freeze some meals that will be easy to reheat.
  • Make arrangements for out-of-town family. Find a list of places to stay near the hospital.
