What We Do

After being referred by your surgeon, you will visit our clinic at least 24 hours before your surgery.

We ensure that educational information is available to you and your family prior to your surgery so that you are fully informed about your impending hospital visit.

We also evaluate your health, identify risk factors and, if necessary, implement measures to prepare higher-risk patients for elective surgery. Our interprofessional team works collaboratively on your assessment.

During your pre-admission visit, we may determine that further testing, including echocardiograms, stress tests and cardiology consults, is needed before your surgery. We will make every effort to complete these procedures in a timely manner.

Our services include:

  • Nursing Assessment
  • Anesthesia Consultation
  • Medicine Consultation
  • Consultation with the program surgical coordinator
  • Blood Conservation Program
  • Pre-Operative Teaching
  • Pre-Operative Endocrine Consultation
  • Pharmacological Assessment by Pharmacist
  • Telehealth Services

Our Telehealth services allow our patients who live outside of Toronto and who will be visiting one of our hospitals for surgery to complete their pre-admission assessments from their local community. This helps to cut down on the costs and inconvenience that can come with travelling. Ask the Pre-Admission Clinic staff if your pre-admission assessments can be completed using our Telehealth services. Learn more about Virtual Visits at UHN.

How to Prepare

  • Please notify the Pre-Admission Clinic staff about any allergies or reactions you have had to any medication, including any reactions to anesthetic medications, contrast for scans or latex.
  • If you have flu-like symptoms, please call the Pre-Admission Clinic at 415 340 3331 (Toronto General Hospital) or 416 603 5800 ext. 5195 (Toronto Western Hospital) before your scheduled appointment.
  • If you need to cancel your appointment at the Pre-Admission Clinic, please also notify your surgeon's office.
  • Your appointment will take 2 to 4 hours or, in some cases, longer.
  • During your appointment, a member of your health care team will tell you about your surgery. Be sure you understand what is going to happen next. For example, know the time and place of your surgery.
