The annual Cancer Education Awards recognize health care workers in the Cancer Program that go above and beyond every day in many ways:

  • By demonstrating excellence in education for patient care
  • By creating or supporting innovative treatments and programs
  • By displaying exemplary compassion, advocacy and patient care

Award Categories

Excellence in Mentorship

The Excellence in Mentorship Award recognizes any staff or faculty member in the Cancer Program who has acted as a mentor and made a significant impact on the mentee(s).

Nominees have:

  • encouraged, facilitated and supported mentees (locally or globally) in academic and/or career and leadership development
  • acted as an effective role model in health professions leadership over a sustained period of time
  • contributed to the development of mentorship advocacy at the local, national, and/or international level

Priority will be given to those mentors with a sustained track record over time, whose mentees are from marginalized or underrepresented groups and those who have mentored individuals in different professions and/or jurisdictions.

Innovation in Education

The Innovation in Education Award recognizes an individual or team who has contributed to an exceptional and innovative educational program or experience for learners of any kind in the Cancer Program.

Nominees use innovative or creative learning tools or strategies, foster a supportive learning environment, and stimulate critical thinking and problem solving through mentorship and innovative approaches. Nominees stand out for excellence, innovative spirit, and commitment to learners.

Outstanding Contribution to Cancer Education

The Outstanding Contribution to Cancer Education Award recognizes outstanding contribution and commitment to Cancer Education.

Nominees have demonstrated their commitment to patient and family education through resource development, demonstration of exemplary patient education skills, and compliments or testimonials by patients and families. Or, nominees have contributed to learner fieldwork/placement, clinical lab or small group experiences, student research, continuing professional development, best practice forums, or faculty development.

Excellence in Education Support

The Excellence in Education Support Award recognizes outstanding contribution to education programs through programmatic support.

Nominees demonstrate exemplary support and dedication in ensuring an education program is well managed and coordinated. This may include going above and beyond by taking initiative to improve learner satisfaction, anticipating needs and responding pre-emptively, drawing attention to gaps or inefficiencies and taking steps to improve processes.

 

Robert V. Brady Award for Best Resident

The Robert V. Brady Award recognizes two residents, one from medical oncology and one from radiation oncology, who demonstrate that they have made a significant contribution to patients and the oncology community within the Cancer Program.

The resident should represent the best qualities that you would wish to see in an oncologist: demonstration of academic excellence; compassion, caring and advocacy for patients, patients' families and colleagues; and exceeding expectations of supervisors and colleagues to ensure that patients are well cared for, thereby contributing significantly to the clinical team.

 

Best Fellow Award

The Best Fellow Award recognizes a fellow in a clinical fellowship program in the Cancer Program who has made a significant contribution to patients and the oncology community.

The fellow should represent the best qualities that you would wish to see in an oncologist: demonstration of academic excellence; compassion, caring and advocacy for patients' families and colleagues; and exceeding expectations of supervisors and colleagues to ensure that patients are well cared for, thereby contributing significantly to the clinical team.

In addition, nominees must be in a clinical fellowship program (within the Radiation Medicine Program, the Division of Medical Oncology and Hematology, Department of Surgical Oncology or the Department of Supportive Care) and be in good academic standing.

How to Nominate a Colleague

Who can nominate

Members of TeamUHN can nominate their colleagues working in the Princess Margaret Cancer Program (at any UHN site). Self-nominations will not be accepted.

Complete the Cancer Education Awards Nomination Form. You will be asked for contact information, to choose which award you are nominating for and to complete a 250 word statement as to why they should win.

Selection Process and Ceremony

Nominations will be reviewed by the Cancer Education Awards Selection Committee in April. Winners are notified in May and are celebrated at the Cancer Education Awards Ceremony.​
