How to Get Referred

You need a referral from your doctor to become a patient at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Without a referral patients will not be seen. This is OMA standard requirements with specialist physicians.

When making a referral, your doctor will include:
  • A letter of referral including all patient demographics
  • Clinical notes
  • Tests, x-rays, CT, MRI and any other relevant results
  • Any time constraints by the patient
  • Any additional appointments you may have arranged for this patient pertaining to this consult request
How Long Does a Referral Take?

It can take up to 4 weeks for a patient to receive an appointment with a Surgical Oncologist. Referrals are triaged daily by the doctors and patients are seen based on the urgency of their diagnosis. Usually the doctor who referred you to Princess Margaret Cancer Centre will contact you with your appointment time. Call the doctor’s office if you do not receive information about your appointment within a few weeks. However please allow 3 weeks for the referral to be processed.

Radiation oncology consults aim to be provided within two weeks of receiving the information and are also prioritized by urgency.
