What We Do

Home hemodialysis allows nephrology patients to receive dialysis treatment at home, by connecting themselves to a dialysis machine. Patients dialyze overnight, while they sleep. The Home Hemodialysis Unit is comprised of the Training Unit and the clinic.

The Training Unit teaches patients and their families how to perform hemodialysis at home. Once a patient is prescribed home hemodialysis they will be scheduled for training in the Training Unit.

After patients and families have completed their dialysis training, they practice their first dialysis session in our Innovation Room. The Innovation Room offers a home-like environment, where staff is close by for help.

The Home Hemodialysis Clinic is where each patient is seen on a monthly basis, by appointment only. During each visit, a patient may meet with a doctor, nurse, dietitian, pharmacist, social worker and chiropodist.

  • Geriatric Nephrology Consult Services
  • A six-week (minimum) training program teaches patients and family members about home hemodialysis. This includes how to insert needles, operate dialysis machine, disinfect equipment and monitor water treatment systems
  • A weekly clinic, staffed by nephrologists, provides patient check-ups, as needed. (Patients visit on an occasional basis, usually every 4-6 weeks.)
  • Nephrology support to Dialysis Management Clinic and self-care dialysis patients
  • Home visits (by nurses and technologists)
