​​Every patient at UHN is impacted by the tests performed in LMP – and almost all diagnoses and treatments are based on lab results.

Our laboratories can determine diagnosis, prognosis and guide treatment decisions for individual patients in a way not previously possible with conventional approaches, often using specific genetic markers. Our six clinical departments are:​

  • Anatomical Pathology
    Study of tissue and cells for the detection of diseases, such as cancer and cardiovascular disease.
  • Clinical ​​Biochemistry
    Study of chemical components including hormones and drugs in blood and body fluids.
  • Clinical Laboratory Genetics​
    Study and genetic analyses of patient samples​ for both inherited and acquired​ diseases. A key component to advancements in personalized medicine.
  • Hematology and Transfusion Medicine
    Study of blood clotting mechanisms and blood and bone marrow disorders, such as anemia and leukemia. Also includes one of Canada's most advanced blood transfusion laboratories.
  • Histocompatibility (HLA)
    Study of organ and stem cell transplant compatibility between donors and patients. Supports transplant programs at the Hospital for Sick Children, St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto General Hospital and Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.
  • Microbiology
    Study of bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites that invade the body and cause diseases such as SARS and West Nile Virus.
