ALERT CONTENT PLACEHOLDER

The Department of Clinical Laboratory Genetics within the Laboratory Medicine Program consists of two laboratories: Genome Diagnostics and Cancer Cytogenetics. The Genetic laboratories specialize in the use of leading edge genetic technologies to diagnose and monitor disease, and to identify biomarkers that can be used for patient management.

With over 30,000 tests performed yearly, Laboratory Genetics receives many interesting and challenging cases for genetic assessment from patients at UHN and externally from sites across Ontario and Canada. The laboratories test both inherited and acquired diseases, with a unique specialty in inherited and acquired cancers as the largest clinical cancer genetics testing service in Canada.

Our partner Advanced Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory (AMDL)is our translational research arm that supports the validation and assessment of new technologies, and works closely with oncologists and scientists at the Princess Margaret Cancer Center to bring new genomic applications into clinical care.

We are proudLaboratory Genetics is on the forefront of advancements in personalized cancer medicine, including our use of leading technologies, such as next-generation sequencing and gene expression analysis to customize medical decisions based on an individual patient's genetic make-up. By analyzing areas in the cancer genome that are prone to mutations in specific conditions, we are able to clarify diagnoses and target specific actionable mutations using targeted therapies.

This approach facilitates patient cancer treatment that is more tailored to the individual, and often less toxic than without personalized treatment. We also are able to provide clarity in clinical diagnosis for inherited disorders through testing of relevant genes and to identify family members at risk through familial testing.

The Genome Diagnostics and Cancer Cytogenetics laboratories are accredited by both the Institute for Quality Management in Healthcare PDF Icon(IQMH) and the College of American Pathologists (CAP/CLIA PDF Icon).
